Anatomy of a megathrust earthquake rupture: the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule, Chile quake
2014 | Hicks, S.P. Invited webinar for IRIS (Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology) presented on 09/04/14. View recording of webinar on YouTube | View slides In February 2010, a magnitude 8.8 megathrust earthquake struck the Maule region of Central Chile - the sixth largest earthquake ever recorded. It is fast becoming one of the best-studied megathrust ruptures, allowing us a unique insight into the inner workings of subduction zone earthquakes. In the earthquake's immediate aftermath, an international group of research institutions deployed geophysical instruments in the rupture area. A network of ~160 seismic stations on the forearc recorded over 50,000 aftershocks in the first 10 months following the earthquake. I have used observations of P- and S-waves from aftershocks ... |

Aftershock mechanisms from the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule, Chile earthquake: detailed analysis using full waveform inversion
2014 | Hicks, S.P., and Rietbrock, A.
Talk presented at AGU Fall Meeting 2014, abstract T41E-06
Since the earthquake rupture process is extremely heterogeneous, it is vital to understand how structural variations in the overriding plate and downgoing slab may control slip style along the subduction megathrust. The large-scale 3-D geometry of subduction plate boundaries is rapidly becoming well understood; however, the nature of any finer-scale structure along the plate interface remains elusive. A detailed study of earthquake source mechanisms along a megathrust region can shed light on the nature of fine-scale structures along the megathrust ...

A high-resolution 3D seismic velocity model of the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule, Chile earthquake rupture zone using land & OBS networks.
2013 | Hicks, S.P., Rietbrock, A., Ryder, I.M.A., Lee, C.S. & Miller, M Talk presented at AGU Fall Meeting 2013, abstract T53F-04 Knowledge of seismic properties along a subduction megathrust can shed light on the composition and structure of rocks along the fault. By comparing seismic velocity structure with models of interseismic locking, co-seismic slip and afterslip, we can begin to understand how physical properties may affect fault dynamics throughout the subduction seismic cycle. The Maule earthquake, which hit the coast of central Chile in 2010, is the 6th largest earthquake ever recorded, rupturing a 500 x 80 km area of the Chilean megathrust. Published models demonstrate a complex bilateral rupture, with most co-seismic slip occurring to the north of the mainshock epicentre, although significant slip likely ... READ FULL ABSTRACT |
